Ocimum is a genera which contains approximately 35 speies of aromatic annuals and evergreen perennials.These species are typically found in the hot, dry regions of Africa and Asia. They possess erect branching stems with linear to rounded leaves occurring in opposite pairs. The flowers are either arranged in loose or dense spiked whorls of 6,occasioally with brightly colored bracts. They do well when utilized as annuals in herb gardens or when planted as early bloomers in a mixed border. They are susceptible to a number of root ,stem, and leaf bacteria in addition to aphids.They are most notably grown for use as culinary herbs |

Ocimum gratissimum, otherwise known as wild basil, clove basil, or tree basil, is a perennial herb with a woody base, stems 1-3 m long with leaves broadly to narrowly ovate, both surfaces copiously glandular punctate, and the upper surface glabrate to sparsely puberulent.
