THE GENERA PHYSOSTEGIA

Physostegia is a genera of 12 species of erect, hairless, rhizomatous perennials native to moist sunny areas of North America. They have alternate pairs of toothed leaves and tubular 2-lipped purple, pink, or white flowers with rather flat upper lips. They are commonly used in borders and for cut flowers. The following species are representative of this genera.


Physostegia virginiana, also known as Obedient plant, and false dragon- head is a rhizomatus spreading perennial with lance shaped,eliptic, toothed, mid-green leaves 13 cm. in length with racemes of deep purple, light lilac-pink, sometimes white flowers 2-3 cm. in length from mid-summer to autumn.

Physostegia purpurea, Eastern False Dragonhead is an upright perennial with alternate toothed leaves and terminal spikes of pinkish-lavender blooms from midsummer to autumn.▲4' ►18-24" Zones 4-8
