THE GENERA BALLOTA

Ballota is a genera containing30-35 species of clump or mat-forming perennials and evergreen subshrubs commonly found from the Mediterrranean, European, and Asian regions in rocky and wasteland habitats. They have opposite,toothed or scalloped, aromatic leaves. They produce whorls of 2-lipped flowers from leaf axils or on terminal shoots from late spring -summer. The following species are examples of this genera..


Ballota nigra or Black Horehound is a hairy perennial with ovate leaves and white or lilac-pink flowers.5" in length from early summer to autumn. ▲ 4'► 10" Zones7-9
Ballota pseudodictamnus forms clumps of succulent greenish-white stems that are clothed with evergreen, oval, grayish-green leaves. The entire plant is covered with a thick, grayish-white down. It grows 24 inches high and spreads about 3 feet. Its white or pale pink flowers are small, tubular and 2-lipped. They are produced within interesting pale green calyces, in mid-summer . ▲ 3' ►24" Zones 5-9
